Finally winter has arrived in BC and we made it to one of the most famous ski resort in the world: Whistler and Whistler Blackcomb. Two mountains, one big area. The Peak2Peak Gondola connects the incredible high alpine of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains in 11 minutes. We were really excited and couldn´t wait to explore the whole area.
At 6am we took the “epic ride” shuttle bus from Vancouver and arrived two hours later at the Whistler village. As it was pretty dark and way too early I slept the whole drive and woke up in a snowy winter wonderland. Is there something better?
For the first runs we chose Blackcomb mountain. The trees were covered in snow, it was sunny and the sky was clearblue. The landscape and the mountain views were incredible! As not every lift was open yet we wanted to get to the top first. Horstman Hut it was! We had the best runs around the 7th Heaven Express. Runs like “upper cloud nine”, “Hugh´s Heaven” or “Sunburn” and everything in between put a huge smile on my face. First day in the season and we had fresh powder and awesome tree runs. Nothing more to say!
After a little break at the Horstman Hut on 2.284m (It is a “european style” hut which you can compare with our huts back home – but the food is slightly different!) it started to snow and the view was really bad. I felt like somewhere in Alaska as the icy wind immediately froze my smile. But the visibility was poor only at the top – as we drove back to the tree line the view was a lot better. And those runs were the best!…. 7th Heaven is really heaven!
And of course we had to take the incredible Peak2Peak gondola which took us to Whistler mountain. Although the sight wasn´t that nice it was quite a nice gondola ride! After the just 11 minutes ride we made a break at the roundhouse lodge, which wasn´t a big difference to “food huts” in Austria or Germany. It was huge and loud and we had some chicken wings and fries. No “Knödel” here!
Unfortunately we had not much time left so we took the long olympic run back down to Whistler village. It was way more crowded than on Blackcomb mountain and the snow was getting worse the further down we came.
At around 4pm the shuttle was already waiting and we made our way back home to Vancouver. I fell asleep immediately.
What a great first day in the snow! Here are some Iphone shots: (I didn´t bring my camera…)
