The Hawaii of Asia: Surfing in Taiwan´s south

Jialeshui: Taiwan’s Surf Town

We travelled with the highspeed train from Taipei to the South. Kaoshiung is the second biggest city of Taiwan where we got a car and drove all the way to beautiful Jialeshui in Kenting national park. What a beauty of nature welcomed us, a tropical climate and wonderful views to the great Pacific Ocean. Jialeshui Beach offers good swell for all – depending on the time of year and weather conditions. We´ve been there in April, end of surfing season in Taiwan and had some solid and consistent waves – perfect for us.

Because of it´s beauty and also it´s location (same latitude) Taiwan´s south is also called the “Hawaii of Asia”. The ocean is super warm, the bottom is sandy with rocks and the waves are right and left. There are few hostels, not more then two restaurants and the beach. There are no crowds, and the road ends right there, so there is very little traffic. That´s it.

Make sure to have a car to drive to busy main street with all shops, restaurant and bars!

Surf, chill and meet easy going locals in the line up – that´s Jialeishui. It´s not fancy, it´s just simple and beautiful.

Puppies & breakfast: Summer point (also B&B) – good coffee, fruits and puppies all over the place!

Food, coffee & magazines (also hotel): Hotel de Plus

Place to stay: Afei hostel in Jialiehsui or Winston hostel (first row)

If you want big waves in Taiwan´s south, come here between September and January, during typhoon season. Japanese favourite time of the year, they said.
